Sending Multiple Tax Returns

If you are sending in multiple tax returns to the IRS or state, do not stuff them all together in one envelope without properly separating them. Often they get lost or disorganized. Do the following steps to make sure they get properly filed:

  1. Sign and date the tax returns in blue pen.
  2. Place each tax return into its own large envelope and write the tax year on that envelope.
  3. Place all the individual tax year envelopes into one larger envelope.
  4. Mail the tax returns USPS certified mail with return receipt.

This ensures they process the tax returns, most of the time. Sometimes they still lose them but rarely and if you were assessed a late penalty but had proof that you mailed it, you should be able to get that penalty abated.
