If you have an unfiled tax return, but no longer have the 1099 or W2 Forms…
- Ask the employer’s payroll department to send it to you if a W2
- Ask the person or company that paid you to send a copy of your 1099
- Request a copy of all income reported to the IRS (wage and income information)
- Request a copy of all income reported to the state(s) (wage and income information)
Even if you left your job on bad terms they probably are not going to hold that against you when requesting records.
Some states like California may want some really old tax returns…
Sometimes the IRS won’t even have the data on file. So instead you ask the state what they are basing the income off of.
Sometimes it could be based on actual reported 1099 and W2s, but it also can be based on professional licenses (and thus completely inaccurate).
